((For you tl;dr people, this following post is my opinion on avoiding this movie for the pure reason its depicts LARPers wrong isn't a good reason. But this is my opinion, not putting anyone down because they don't want to watch it for this reason. Just expressing an opinion.

Personally, there are many movies that make anyone look like sociopaths. This movie is just based on a little bit more of a common nature. Of course, I know many roleplayers that get too involved with their character. And this is more like mob mentality. A small group of attached characters begin something, and then everyone joins in because then it doesn't become the individuals fault.

In reality, I find that as long as you have the logical knowledge that LARPers are not psychological freaks, it's not a sin to watch this movie. Indeed, this movie is going to make people shun us, but on the other hand, there are documentaries out there that meant to reveal the fact that there are real people in under the roleplayer's mask, but people will still distort it and lock on to one part of it.

For example, "The Dungeon Masters" is a very good documentary about Roleplaying games. Centered around Table-Top gaming, it shows the real life behind the DMs and players. One of the three main people in the movie is a LARPer that attends the Mississippi branch of SOLAR. She plays a Drow. However, she's really socially inept and so she is recessive and stays inside of her apartment, still dressed like a Drow. She's not screwed up in the head or anything, she's a very nice person and still a human in her mind. But dressing as a Drow provides her escape and comfort.

Now, any one who just hears that, is going to instantly think, "Oh god, this girl is insane. She is WAY too into LARPing." But the reality is that she is just looking for freedom. People will take that one female and apply it to all LARPers. It's just going to happen socially. So boycotting this movie just because it's going to cause negative opinions of the real players of the LARPing game isn't, in my opinion, a needed action of us LARPers. As a person studying Social Psychology, I really want to see it, just for the psychological development and storyline.

All in all, if you don't want to watch it, that's fine. But I say give it at least a chance as a just a movie of fiction. Nothing more.

See... I've never shunned my larping.  People ask what I do on certain weekends and I tell them...then they look at me as if I just announced that I have Herpes or something.  I shrug.

My favorite is when I say what I do and the person looks at me in disgust and says.  "That's freaking stupid!"

and I respond with a smiling... "Well then thank God you don't do it!!!  You might ruin my fun."

Hi.  My name's mOss.

I LARP... and I'm damned proud of it.

Geeks already own the earth.

It's funny, but when I tell folks what I do (and I tell just about everyone I meet) they think it sounds cool. I don't think I've ever gotten a truly negative response, even from folks who would't be interested in playing.
