The rules may be found here:
http://www.shadowmoor.org/articles/rules/2009-rules-package
Look on page 241 for directions on how to make your own weapons. If you want more specifics, feel free to ask.

As someone who also has martial arts training, know that the combat we do is very different from actual combat and will take some adjusting to. On that note, I would come to your first event before making your own custom made weapon so that you can get a better feel for how well your design will work. It will also give you a chance to talk to some of the other players and discuss the pros and cons of your design and enable you to make a better weapon. Also, what area do you reside in? Depending on where you are, you may be able to meet with some of the other players instead of just talking to them online. I live in Virginia Beach so I probably won't be able to meet up with you, but there's a bunch of people who live in the Carolinas (both new and old players) that could help you fit in. Also, there is nothing wrong with being a noob at SOLAR. Everyone starts off as a noob (and I do mean everyone) and then learns how to play the game. We, as a group of players, like noobs because they have a lot of good ideas (looking forward to seeing your weapon) and tend to think outside the box. If you have questions, ask them and you'll get a friendly reply. Ask the same question 20 times and we'll wonder if you have memory problems
I do believe there has been some discussion about a combat practice/meet and greet sometime next month in the General Discussion section and would be a great thing to look into. Feel free to send me a private message about questions, concerns, how a lot of your martial arts training may not apply to SOLAR combat, and general topics of whatever.

Hah! That's amusing. I live in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. So, does your city have an interesting history like mine does?

I can tall you as someone who has had formal weapons training that is it defiantly not like the real thing but having something to base your stile off heps. I thin one of the reasons I was able to use a polearm so well is beaus I have training at using the bo staff and although I don't use the exact same moves I was taught defending is the same and so I have something to use as a foundation for a style. We also have s JR Olympics fencer and I am sure its that same with her and swords.

For safety reasons, our fighting style rules out most of the interesting martial arts weapons. You can only swing in a 45 degree to 90 degree Arc, and weapons can only be made of a single piece of PVC with any area that will come in contact with another player must be padded.
You can check out the weapon making guidelines on page 233 of the rulebook

All melee weapons in SOLAR must have a core of one, and only one, piece of PVC. (Very long weapons like polearms may have a second, smaller piece of pvc inserted through the middle of their core to prevent whipping.
This means you can't use any fittings, elbows, or any other plumbing contraption to change this. Which makes tonfa an illegal weapon. And VERY dangerous, since using them properly means you're clobbering someone. We only strive to touch the opponent, not hit them. For the same reason, weapons can't be flexible. You are allowed to use heat to make a small bend or curve in your weapon core, but don't go too crazy with it or you'll destroy the integrity of the pipe.
The best thing to do is come out to an event and see what our combat is like. We don't use super creative weapon types simply because anything that branches, hooks, curves (too much) or is flexible is harder to control and much more likely to cause someone to get hurt.
Okay, enough with the negative stuff, get yourself out to our November event in a few weeks! We'd love to see you.

No need to feel that way Solar is unique and a great experience. I've been playing off and on for a very long time and I can tell you the experience goes beyond what most would expect. It really is a game that you have to experience first to understand why the rules are what they are the combat is fast furious but you leave the feild feeling like you accomplished something the Role playing is the most fun for me.

No, don't feel bad, we have to tell people who've been playing for years that their weapon ideas won't work !
The next event is in two weeks. Come out and try it out, see what it's like. You can even borrow a weapon for the event!
