I have had a couple people tell me a couple different things,  and just wanted to get a final ruling. Is a spear required to be swung in an arc like other weapons, or can you thrust with it? I was told that thrusting is against the rules in Shadowmoor, but I have been seeing and hearing differently in the rulebook and other sources.

"A Spear is a thrusting and slashing weapon and may not be thrown, two hands must be used to attack with a spear while only one is necessary to parry."

From the rulebook. Thrusting a spear is absolutely legal, but be careful when doing so.

In fact, any edged weapon can be used for thrusting (hence why they require a thursting tip).  However, you'll find in SOLAR combat it is generally more effective to swing swords and daggers than thrust with them.

Fun side fact!

Almost. You can't thrust with an axe. ;P Anything with a pokey tip on the end is thrustable. You can't thrust with blunt weapons, including staff, nor can you thrust with an axe. Spears, polearms, swords of all descriptions, and daggers are all thrust-worthy. Just be aware that thrusting puts a lot more force behind your swing than a typical swing, and most thrusts tend to hit people in the gut. Which hurts, so ease up on 'em.

It's not specifically mentioned in the rulebook at all, David. But, for simplicity's sake (We have to draw lines in certain places to make the game work more smoothly, even if it sacrifices realism) axes can't thrust.
